Glossary

Key terms to know when researching and validating your app idea on the App Store.

A
App Bundle
A group of apps sold together at a discounted price. Developers can bundle their own apps to encourage users to buy multiple products.
App ID
A unique numeric identifier Apple assigns to every app. It's used in App Store URLs and API calls to look up specific apps.
App Preview
A short video (up to 30 seconds) shown on an app's listing page. It lets potential users see the app in action before downloading.
App Store Connect
Apple's portal where developers manage their apps — submitting builds, setting pricing, viewing analytics, and responding to reviews.
App Store Optimization (ASO)
The practice of improving an app's visibility in App Store search results. It involves optimizing keywords, titles, descriptions, icons, and screenshots to get more downloads.
Average Rating
The mean score of all user reviews, shown as 1 to 5 stars. A higher rating generally leads to better search rankings and more trust from potential users.
B
Bundle ID
A reverse-domain string (like com.yourname.appname) that uniquely identifies an app in Apple's system. Once set, it can't be changed.
C
Category
The section of the App Store where an app is listed (e.g., Productivity, Games, Health & Fitness). Each app has a primary category and an optional secondary one.
Category Ranking
An app's position within its category chart. Rankings are based on recent downloads, revenue, and engagement — and they update multiple times per day.
Competitor Analysis
Researching other apps that target the same audience or keywords. It helps you understand what's working in your niche and where you can stand out.
Conversion Rate
The percentage of people who visit your app listing and actually download it. Better screenshots, descriptions, and ratings typically improve this number.
Customer Review
A written rating left by a user. Reviews affect your average rating and can influence whether new users decide to download your app.
D
Developer Name
The name shown below the app title on its listing page. It's the name tied to your Apple Developer account.
Download Estimate
An approximation of how many times an app has been downloaded. Apple doesn't share exact numbers publicly, so third-party tools calculate estimates based on ranking data.
E
Editorial Feature
When Apple's editorial team highlights an app in a story, collection, or banner on the App Store. It can drive a big spike in downloads.
Exact Match
A search result where the app name matches the search query word-for-word. Useful for checking if a specific name is already taken.
F
Freemium
A pricing model where the app is free to download but offers paid features or content through in-app purchases or subscriptions.
Fuzzy Match
A search result where the app name is similar — but not identical — to the search query. Helps find apps with close or overlapping names.
I
IAP (In-App Purchase)
Extra content or features users can buy inside the app — like unlocking premium tools, removing ads, or buying virtual items.
Impressions
The number of times your app appeared in search results, featured lists, or other placements on the App Store. Not all impressions lead to taps.
K
Keyword
A word or phrase that describes your app and helps it appear in search results. Apple gives you a 100-character keyword field in App Store Connect.
Keyword Difficulty
A score estimating how hard it is to rank for a specific keyword. High-difficulty keywords have more competition and need stronger signals to rank well.
Keyword Volume
An estimate of how often a keyword is searched in the App Store. Higher volume means more potential traffic — but usually more competition too.
L
Localization
Translating and adapting your app listing (title, description, screenshots) for different countries and languages to reach a wider audience.
M
Market Research
The process of studying an app market before building or launching. It includes checking name availability, analyzing competitors, and understanding user demand.
N
Name Availability
Whether an app name is already in use on the App Store. Checking this early saves time and avoids rejection during the review process.
O
Organic Download
A download that happens naturally — through search, browsing, or word of mouth — without paid advertising.
P
Partial Match
A search result where the app name contains some — but not all — of the search query words. Helpful for spotting similar names.
Product Page
The main listing page for an app on the App Store. It includes the icon, screenshots, description, ratings, reviews, and download button.
R
Rating Count
The total number of ratings an app has received. A higher count builds trust and makes the average rating more meaningful.
Revenue Estimate
An approximation of how much money an app earns. Like download estimates, these are calculated by third-party tools since Apple doesn't publish revenue publicly.
S
Screenshot
Images displayed on an app's product page showing how the app looks and works. They're often the biggest factor in whether someone decides to download.
Search Ads
Apple's paid advertising platform that lets developers bid on keywords to appear at the top of App Store search results.
Search Ranking
An app's position in App Store search results for a given keyword. Higher rankings mean more visibility and usually more downloads.
Storefront
A country-specific version of the App Store. Each storefront has its own charts, editorial features, and search results — an app might rank differently in the US vs. Japan.
Subtitle
A short line of text (up to 30 characters) that appears below the app name. It's a great place to add keywords or briefly explain what the app does.
Subscription
A recurring payment model where users pay weekly, monthly, or yearly for continued access to an app or its premium features.
T
Top Charts
The ranked lists of most popular apps, organized by category and type (Free, Paid, Grossing). Charts are updated frequently based on downloads and revenue.
V
Visibility Score
A combined metric that reflects how easy it is for users to find your app — based on keyword rankings, category position, and search impressions.
